The Windsor is TRUE knot, and it should be the first one learned; sadly, the four-in-hand is the one that has greater currency in our rushed age. My personal favorite is the half-Windsor, for its preservation of the Windsor's complexity coupled with an asymnetrical panache that the four-in-hand is too slapdash to truly muster.
Yeah, I know the equations were the "fun" part, but I'm a theatre/cinema/literature guy. Sue me.
